8 Best Employee Recognition Software for Education (2026)

Liziana CarterWritten by Liziana Carter, CEO at Culture Engine
Published Oct 30, 2026

For any school choosing the best employee recognition software for education, the first question is which platform the staff already sign into every morning.

Institutions standardized on Microsoft Teams can use one set of tools, while those on Google Workspace prefer a different and smaller set. Support staff without an institutional account, like the people who work in catering, facilities, transport and after-school care, are reached by fewer tools still. In practice, the tools an institution can use depend heavily on the systems it already has in place. Yet most software comparison pages barely consider this, if they mention it at all.

This guide to staff recognition software for schools is sorted by platform. Every tool states which environments it runs in and which staff it is designed for. The comparison table has a column for each, and the scoring is explained. Culture Engine, which we built, runs inside Slack and Microsoft Teams. It works for a school or trust on Teams and it does not work on Google Workspace. We say so in the entry, in the first FAQ, and here.

Usually, the need comes from something specific, such as staff retention figures, staff survey results on feeling valued, or a recognition scheme that amounts to one awards evening in July. The budget, however, was often set long before the need arose. That makes price and whether a single school can start on its own especially important.

Scores use seven criteria that weight Slack and Microsoft Teams depth heavily. That favors tools built for a chat platform.

If your institution runs Google Workspace, start with Bonusly, and ask Bucketlist and Mo whether they support it.

How We Evaluated Recognition Platforms for Education

Every platform was scored one to 10 on seven criteria, then weighted. The weights are published so you can check the arithmetic.

The 8 Best Employee Recognition Software for Education in 2026

Which employee recognition software is best for a school? Start with your platform, then your staff mix, then move on to everything else. Here is how the eight compare, ranked by score, with the environment each runs in stated first.

#1

Culture Engine

Best for Schools on Microsoft Teams
Score9.2/10cultureengine.ai

Culture Engine is our employee recognition and rewards software, and it runs natively inside Microsoft Teams and Slack. For a school, trust or district standardized on Teams, it reaches staff who are full members of your Teams or Slack workspace and have an email address, including teaching staff, administrative staff, and support staff who have been given a login. Guest accounts, such as some supply teachers and contractors, are not included. It does not run on Google Workspace, and it does not reach staff who have no institutional account at all.

Best for: schools, multi-academy trusts and districts standardized on Microsoft Teams, where recognition currently happens once a year at an awards evening.

The 4 Problems We Built Culture Engine to Solve

Problem 1

Recognition happens once a year, at an awards evening in July.

An annual ceremony recognizes only a handful of employees and comes months after the work they’re being thanked for. The teacher who covered three classes in October, or the office manager who got the census in on time might get a thank you but only if someone remembers to give one.

Shoutouts happen the week the work does, from anyone to anyone.

A shoutout is posted in a shared Teams channel, comes with Coins and a school value tag, and the message and value tag can be edited after sending. There is no approval step and no org chart filter. A teaching assistant can recognize a head of their department, and the site team can recognize the office.

The awards evening can stay. It just stops being the only time anyone says thank you publicly.

Problem 2

Long service is tracked in a spreadsheet and missed when nobody checks it.

Work anniversaries matter in education because they help people feel valued and give them a reason to stay. But in most schools, they’re tracked in a spreadsheet that the business manager gets around to checking when there is time. Missing someone’s 10-year anniversary is worse than never having marked it down at all.

Birthdays and work anniversaries post themselves.

Our bot posts birthdays and work anniversaries in the channel, colleagues can reply under the post, and nothing is put in anyone's calendar. Dates are added in Culture Engine.

, and the recap can be paused over the holidays.

Problem 3

Budget was fixed before the need for recognition arose, and there is no district contract.

A school finds out it needs recognition software in the fall term, but the budget was set in the spring. Quote-only platforms with annual minimums and district-level agreements do not fit that reality.

One published price, a single-school purchase, and a trial with no card required.

Pro is $3 per seat per month, billed annually, with every feature included and nothing on a higher tier except a custom Enterprise plan. Seats are the people in a #culture-engine channel that billing period, so a single school can start with its own staff, with no trust or district agreement. The trial is 14 days with no credit card. Coins are funded separately and billed only when redeemed, so the rewards spend is capped by the allowance you set.

Problem 4

Recognition practice varies by site, and it’s not easy to see.

In a trust or district, one school has a vibrant thank you culture and the next has nothing. Central teams have retention data per site and no recognition data at all.

The Weekly Recap gives the team a participation rate once it reaches 60%, and nobody is ranked.

The Weekly Recap shows how many shoutouts were shared, the team participation rate (hidden below 60%) and the most recognized value. We never rank people. No leaderboard, no scores, no per-person list anywhere. Once a week, we celebrate the moment the team loved most, and everyone gets to see it. It is always a team rate.

Interactive product demo

Pricing

One plan, priced for a school office rather than a district procurement team. Pro is $3 per seat per month, billed annually, with every feature included: unlimited shoutouts, rewards, weekly reward allowances, automatic celebrations and reminders, unlimited custom company values, and an analytics dashboard. No contracts, no minimums, no early termination fees, so a single school can start without a trust or district agreement. The trial is 14 days with no credit card. Coins are funded separately and billed only when redeemed. There is no separate education rate. Enterprise is custom and adds dedicated onboarding, custom features and reporting, and shared channel support.

Integrations

Microsoft Teams and Slack, both native, the same app on each. No Google Workspace. Coins can be redeemed for gift cards, prepaid cards and donations, with 2,500 options in 200+ countries, including Amazon, Apple, Target and Starbucks gift cards, prepaid Visa cards and donations. There is no HRIS or MIS sync today, so birthdays and start dates are added in Culture Engine.

Setup

About one minute once IT has approved it, which in a school is the real step. The Microsoft Teams admin or Slack workspace admin adds the app, puts the staff in one channel, sets a weekly Coin allowance, and leaves the first week alone. Staff install nothing, and there is no second login. In a school, the installing admin is usually IT or the trust's central team, so send them the Trust Center link with the request.

Tradeoffs

We do not run on Google Workspace, which rules us out for a large share of schools before any other criterion applies. We’re only available to staff with an institutional Teams or Slack account, so support staff without one are not reached. We are new, with no education case studies, no named customers and no review volume, while Bonusly, Awardco and Bucketlist have years of all three. There is no HRIS or MIS sync and no separate education pricing. SOC 2 is in progress. Installation requires a workspace admin, which in a school means IT. A Google Workspace institution should look first at Bonusly or Nectar, which work in Google Chat, and ask Bucketlist and Mo whether they support it. A school that needs to reach staff with no account should look at Nectar or Awardco.

Support

A real human answers every email within one business day, including during term-time crunch weeks. The help center covers the admin tasks in articles that mostly take under a minute to read. For the IT and data-protection review a school will run, the Trust Center covers encryption in transit and at rest, least-privilege scopes and a pre-signed data processing agreement. We never sell your data, and we never use it to train AI models without your permission.

Matter

Best for Teams Schools Wanting a Free Tier
Score8.5/10matterapp.com

Matter is native to both Microsoft Teams and Slack, publishes its price, and has a free tier for unlimited users. Like Culture Engine, it does not run on Google Workspace.

Product overview

Values-tagged kudos with optional give-coins, celebrations, and a weekly Feedback Friday prompt. Give-coins reset weekly. Earned balances do not expire and can be redeemed in the Matter web app.

Pricing

Free forever, kudos only. Basic is $1 per user per month billed annually. Pro is $3 and adds rewards, swag and challenges. Surveys are $2 more. Enterprise is custom.

Integrations

Microsoft Teams and Slack, both native. eGift cards from 3,500+ brands across 200+ countries on Pro.

Setup

About two minutes.

Tradeoffs

Rewards need the $3 Pro plan. Give-coins expiring weekly creates urgency by design, and the Challenges module encourages competition. For a school on Teams with no budget line at all, the free tier is the right place to start.

#3

Bonusly

Best for Google Workspace Schools
Score7.4/10bonus.ly

Bonusly is the most established peer recognition platform in the category, and the one with a published price that runs on Google Workspace, which makes it the default for a large share of schools and districts.

Product overview

Everyone gets a monthly points allowance, recognition is tagged to company values, and points redeem from a zero-markup catalog. Recognition can be given from Google Workspace, Slack, Microsoft Teams or the mobile app, with the feed and redemption in the Bonusly app.

Pricing

Free for up to eight users. Team includes Bizy AI and is $5 per user per month, or $50 per user per year on annual billing. Bonusly's FAQ also lists Team without Bizy at $3 per user per month or $30 per user per year. Organization is custom.

Integrations

Google Workspace, Slack, Microsoft Teams and more than 30 HRIS platforms and other tools, including BambooHR, Workday and ADP.

Setup

Self-serve, same day.

Tradeoffs

The monthly giving allowance lapses, a leaderboard exists, and redemption means leaving the chat tool. The free tier stops at eight users. For a Google district that wants hire dates flowing from an HRIS, it is the strongest published-price option available.

#4

Awardco

Best for Long Service Programs
Score6.9/10awardco.com

Awardco is the strongest option here for a formal long service, retirement or awards program at district scale, and AwardCodes let it recognize staff who work offline.

Product overview

Recognition posts to Teams or Slack and to a social feed, with redemption and program design in Awardco. Programs can be built around milestones and tenure tiers. Its Amazon Business partnership gives it one of the largest catalogs anywhere, with no markup. AwardCodes are codes given for offline recognition: when a staff member scans one, the points go into their Awardco account.

Pricing

Packages for organizations with 100 employees or fewer start at $3,000, and larger programs are quote only. You book a demo, and no free trial is listed.

Integrations

Microsoft Teams, Slack, Workday, ADP, Outlook, HRIS and SSO.

Setup

About an hour for the Slack app, according to Awardco. A district-wide rollout is an implementation project.

Tradeoffs

Rewards-first and reward-heavy. For a single school, it is more than you need. For a district replacing a manual long service award program across 30 sites, it is the strongest fit on this list.

#5

HeyTaco

Best for Schools Wanting Month-to-Month Billing
Score6.8/10heytaco.com

HeyTaco is native to both Microsoft Teams and Slack, gives everyone five tacos a day to hand out, and bills month to month.

Product overview

Add the taco emoji to a message. Each person gets five tacos a day to give, received tacos accumulate, and Taco TV and a leaderboard show the activity. Rewards on the Classic tier are custom ones set by an admin, which, in a school, could be a parking space or a Friday afternoon off.

Pricing

HeyTaco has a 30-day free trial with no credit card. After that, Classic is $3 and Deluxe is $5 per user per month, billed monthly with no contract. Nonprofits can apply for a discounted plan after the trial starts.

Integrations

Microsoft Teams and Slack, both native. No Google Workspace. No HRIS.

Setup

Minutes.

Tradeoffs

No gift card catalog on the Classic tier, so rewards are whatever the admin attaches, and gift cards are available on the Deluxe tier. A leaderboard is included, and admins can switch it off. It does not run on Google Workspace.

#6

Nectar

Best for Reaching Support Staff
Score6.6/10nectarhr.com

Nectar is a mid-market platform built to reach staff without an institutional email, with kiosk mode for a shared screen in the staffroom and SMS for catering, facilities and transport staff.

Product overview

Values-tagged shoutouts with points from a monthly allowance, posted to Teams and Slack, with the core experience in the Nectar app. Kiosk mode puts recognition on a shared screen. SMS reaches staff who never sit at a computer.

Pricing

Quote only. Three modules, Recognize, Comms and Engage, with no per-user figure. Demo required.

Integrations

Microsoft Teams, Slack, Google Chat, HRIS connections including ADP, Workday and Rippling, and an Amazon rewards catalog.

Setup

Sales-led.

Tradeoffs

Quote-only pricing, leaderboards and a platform-centric experience. A single school will struggle to get it approved on its own. A district that wants one vendor covering teaching staff and the site team will find the kiosk and SMS modes the best in this set.

#7

Bucketlist

Best for Districts Wanting Nominations
Score6.2/10bucketlistrewards.com

Bucketlist is a points-based recognition platform with nominations, awards and a rewards catalog, and it sends recognition from Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail and Outlook.

Product overview

Peer and manager recognition, nominations for formal awards, milestone automation, and a catalog with gift cards and points-based redemption. The Google Workspace integration makes it one of the few full platforms available to a Google district.

Pricing

Quote only.

Integrations

Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail and Outlook, plus HRIS tools such as Workday, ADP, SAP, Oracle, HiBob and BambooHR.

Setup

Sales-led.

Tradeoffs

Pricing is not published. For a Google district that wants a nominations program and a catalog from one vendor, it is the most complete option here.

#8

Mo

Best for Trusts Wanting Habit Prompts
Score6.0/10mo.work

Mo is a recognition platform built around Moments and habit prompts, and it integrates with Microsoft Teams and Slack.

Product overview

Staff post Moments to recognize colleagues, custom awards mark anniversaries and achievements, and built-in prompts nudge the habit. Engagement dashboards track recognition frequency and participation. Mo has a rewards store with gift cards from well-known brands, and admins can add company merchandise and extra days off.

Pricing

Quote only, with a free demo.

Integrations

Microsoft Teams, Slack and HRIS tools, according to Mo's own site. Mo does not name Google Workspace, so ask Mo before assuming it works for a Google school.

Setup

Sales-led.

Tradeoffs

Pricing is on request, so a school has to book a demo to get a number. For a trust that wants a recognition habit without a points economy, it is a reasonable fit, and a Google school should ask Mo first whether it supports Google Workspace.

How We Built This Guide

We started with the moments that send a school or district looking for recognition software, like a retention report or a staff survey on feeling valued. Then we checked which environment each tool runs in, verified every price against the vendor's own pricing page or published listing in October 2026, and used review platforms for recurring patterns.

What to Look For in Employee Recognition Software for Education

Each item starts with the problem a school might be facing, since a feature is only worth paying for if it solves a problem you actually have.

  1. 01

Whether It Runs on Your Platform

If your institution is on Google Workspace, Culture Engine, Matter, HeyTaco and Awardco will not work for you. Bonusly and Nectar work in Google Chat, Bucketlist has a Gmail add-on, and Mo does not name Google Workspace on its site, so ask Mo first.

  2. 02

    Which Staff It Reaches

If catering, facilities and transport staff have no institutional account, a chat-based tool will not reach them. Nectar's kiosk and SMS modes do, and Awardco's AwardCodes are built for offline staff. Check who on your payroll has a login before you assume the tool covers everyone.

  3. 03

    A Single-School Purchase Route

If the budget has already been fixed, you may need to start with one school without a district contract. Culture Engine, Matter, Bonusly and HeyTaco all allow that, while quote-only platforms are usually sold at district or trust level.

  4. 04

Something That Runs Across a Term Without a Scheduled Moment

If recognition currently happens at an annual awards evening, look for a tool that keeps it going year-round. Automated nudges, anniversaries that post themselves, and a recurring recap keep the habit alive through the term without anyone running a program.

  5. 05

Participation by Site, Without a Ranking

If retention is reported per school, recognition should be too. Ask whether the tool reports a participation rate per site, and whether it does so as a team rate or as a ranking of individuals. A leaderboard in a staffroom is often a morale problem waiting to happen.

  6. 06

The Price, and the Real Annual Cost

If you are choosing a tool for one school, you need a number without having to make a sales call. Four of the eight tools here publish a per-user price: Culture Engine, Matter, Bonusly and HeyTaco. Then compare it against the cost of one person leaving. Employees who received high-quality recognition were 45% less likely to have left their job two years later, according to Gallup, and replacing a teacher midyear is disruptive.

Education Recognition Software Pricing Compared

Recognition software is two line items. The software fee is per seat, and the rewards budget is what people actually redeem. For a school, the second line is the one to decide deliberately, because it is the one that was likely not included in the budget.

A 60-staff school on our plan pays 60 seats at $3, or $2,160 a year in software. Rewards at a $10 weekly allowance with roughly half redeemed is about $15,600 a year, for a total near $17,800. A school can set the allowance lower, since recognition itself is unlimited and free, and Coins are only billed when redeemed.

Gallup estimates replacing a technical employee costs about 80% of their salary and a manager about 200%, so the software line is tiny against one midyear departure. Our turnover calculator puts a figure on it in about 10 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Culture Engine runs inside Microsoft Teams and Slack only. A school or district on Google Workspace cannot use it. Bonusly works in Google Chat and publishes its price. Nectar also lists Google Chat. Bucketlist has a Gmail add-on, and Mo does not name Google Workspace on its site, so ask both before choosing them for a Google school.
